Ethereum ups data capacity: 14 blob scaling upgrade explained

Ethereum Raises Data Cap to 14 Blobs in Pre-emptive Scaling Move

Ethereum has increased its data capacity, targeting 14 blobs per block to support growth from Layer-2 networks like Arbitrum and Optimism. The upgrade helps prevent future congestion and aligns with Vitalik Buterin’s vision of scalable, secure blockchain infrastructure.

Ethereum Raises Data Cap to 14 Blobs in Pre-emptive Scaling Move

Ethereum has implemented a targeted upgrade, increasing its network’s data capacity to accommodate growing demand from layer-2 scaling solutions.

Activated this week, the “Blob Parameter Only” fork raised the target for data “blobs” from 10 to 14 per block, with the maximum limit increasing from 15 to 21. Blobs are dedicated spaces for data from rollups like Arbitrum and Base, which process transactions off-chain before settling on Ethereum.

The move is a pre-emptive scaling step. While blob usage has risen steadily since its introduction, current demand remains well below the new limits. Developers state this “parametric” adjustment shows Ethereum can now scale data availability on the fly as needed, preventing congestion before it starts.

In related comments, co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently argued that Ethereum’s roadmap has effectively solved the blockchain trilemma—balancing scalability, security, and decentralization—through live upgrades like PeerDAS.
