Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution have launched Indonesia’s first battery cell plant, a $1.1 billion facility in West Java. Announced in 2021, the factory started operations on Wednesday and will produce enough cells to power 50,000 EVs annually.

Indonesia, rich in nickel, is attracting EV sector investments under President Joko Widodo’s “downstreaming” policy. The country already produces 50% of the world’s nickel and is expected to increase its share.

Additionally, Chinese companies CATL and BYD are planning to build plants in Indonesia, drawn by tax incentives and low energy costs.
